Chrissies - 15 Cross Street

Chrissies, 15 Cross Street
Number 15 is part of an impressive and highly decorative row of Edwardian brick buildings along the north side of Cross Street. The building is distinguished by paired sashes at first and second floor level under arched openings with stone surrounds, and a decoratively carved impost band and dentil course. The modern masonry paint obscuring the brickwork on the front elevation of Chrissies detracted from the overall character of the row and the building had been disfigured by unsightly and damaging bird fouling.
Grant aided works
The scheme involved the removal of the paintwork to expose the original brick facing, followed by cleaning and repairs to the brick and stone, the refurbishment of sash windows, replacement of defective lead flashing, roof timbers and gutters and replacement of upvc rainwater goods with cast iron. Re roofing works with welsh slates were also carried out and the reinstatement of traditional blue brick paviours within the shared yard with no 17.
Together with the restoration of the adjacent Number 17 the scheme has made significant progress towards the restoration of the whole row allowing it to once again read as a visually cohesive unit.
