The Former Iron Works

The Former Iron Works

The Former Iron Works

The grade II listed former ironworks dates from the turn of the 19th century and was once part of Thomas Pryces' iron empire. 'In 1856 Thomas Pryce was described as a wholesale and retail ironmonger, iron and brass founder, agricultural implement maker, tin plate worker, brazier and bell ringer.'

It is a substantial three storey detached building, with attached two storey section, and is predominantly constructed of red brick with some stone rubble walling under a shallow pitched hipped slated roof. The building is chiefly characterised by its round headed windows, many of which had been blocked up or altered although two original cast iron window frames remained.

Grant Aided Works

The building was derelict and empty, suffering from significant and noticeable structural defects, which necessitated extensive remedial works and major reconstruction. Under the THI an extensive scheme of repair has been executed involving the rebuilding of defective walling to replicate the original random pattern of construction, roof repairs and reslating. The surviving historic cast iron windows provided a template for the production of replica cast iron windows resulting in a major visual enhancement.  The interior has been refurbished and the walls colour limewashed.

Once open the building will be an exciting new venue for live music, arts and entertainment together with a café and bar and will generate new jobs.
