The Malt House
The Malt HouseThe grade II listed Malt House was originally built as a theatre in 1819 by William Ormsby Gore and subsequently converted to a Malthouse in 1855 by Mr Thomas of Ardmillan House, later Alderman Thomas, Mayor of Oswestry. The large three storey building has brick and stone walls under a pitched slate roof and has a stone string course with widely spaced dentils to the front gable and brick dentilled eaves cornices to the side elevations. The front elevation is in three sections with arched headed window and door openings and an infilled roundel to the gable. The site also includes an attached single storey gabled range to rear which was used as a Gasworks and brick and stone boundary walls incorporating three 19th century single storey garages. Grant aided worksGeneral decay had led to water ingress and the roof had reportedly been leaking over a period of 40 years. The building was in a dilapidated and deteriorating condition. The major scheme of renovation and reuse set out to halt this decline and ensure the building's continued survival. This included the restoration of the Willow Street façade, repointing, repair of the existing and/or manufacturing of new oak windows and doors, rainwater goods, the opening up of circular gable windows and replacement of the canopy to the external hoist. The interior has had a new "limecrete" floor, which is a sympathetic alternative to modern damp proofing and which allows the building to 'breathe'; together with the application of limewash to the walls. The cast iron columns at ground floor level have been reinstated, helping to restore the historic interest and character of the building. Conversion of the garages has increased the amount of workshop space. The result has created prestigious premises for the expansion of the bespoke furniture design and production business of Vidal & Company and floorspace for additional workshops and intends to safeguard 6 jobs and generate a further 4.
