Flooding and Land DrainageFor situations where life is or may be at risk contact Shropshire Fire and Rescue service using the 999 system (where there is a medical emergency contact the ambulance service using the 999 system and informing them if your property is cut off by floodwater). Requests for Sandbags Requests for SandbagsFor sandbags/complaints of flooding during office hours, other than on highway, contact Environmental Services on 01691 677225 (out of hours, for urgent requests only, please call 01978 264332, the duty officer is authorised to provided sandbags after hours without reference to anybody else). For Flooding Forecasts / River Level WarningsTo find out about any potential flooding in your area, visit the Environment Agency Website or contact the local office at Shelton on 01743 272828 but please be patient as they can become very busy with flood warning/level enquiries. The Environmental Agency have just launched a Flood Awareness Campaign for older people. A leaflet 'Flooding: be prepared, a guide for older people' has been produced in partnership with Help the Aged. View Leaflet - Flooding be prepared Listen to Radio Shropshire on 96 fmThey broadcast regular updates on flooding, road and school closures etc. Building in Flood-Prone AreasFor more detailed information on building in areas prone to flooding, please go to the CIRIA Website Highway FloodingContact Shropshire County Council Highways at Park Hall - 01691 662276 Drainage ProblemsThis unit is responsible (along with other agencies such as Shropshire County Council, the Environment Agency and the Melverley Internal Drainage Board) for enforcing obligations of landowners in respect of watercourses flowing through their land (Riparian Owners). Additionally Environmental Services will oversee certain watercourses, indicated in the Borough Council's High Level Asset Management Plan, which give rise to potential medium to high risk of flooding of property The unit will work with Development Services and the Environment Agency where appropriate to ensure that sustainable drainage policies are implemented and that there is no encroachment on identified flood plain(s) other than in accordance with the relevant guidance.
