Private Water Supplies

The department carries out statutory monitoring of some 145 private water supplies within the Borough in accordance with Government guidance.

It provides advice and guidance on the suitability of and treatment of such supplies to render them safe for human consumption. The Unit has a range of statutory enforcement powers that can be used in certain circumstances to safeguard risks to human health from private water supplies.

If your property is served by a single private supply, e.g. borehole, well, spring, it is recommended that a test is carried out on a yearly basis. Supplies serving more than one property or dairies etc will require testing more often depending on the total volume consumed. What Is Tested For And Why? The 'Basic Nine' The basic nine test analyses private water samples for:

• Total Coliforms
• Conductivity
• Nitrate
• Hydrogen Ions (pH)
• Turbidity
• Odour (qualitative)
• Taste (qualitative)
• Lead
• Faecal Coliforms
