Food Complaints This page provides information on food safety and food hygiene, and aims to ensure that all food produced and sold within the borough is safe to eat. Food ComplaintsThis department deals with all food hygiene complaints within the borough, including any food products produced within the borough. We also handle hygiene complaints, contaminated food and unfit premises. If you wish to report a food related matter, please contact a member of this department on 01691 677225. New Premises RegistrationTo register a new food premises, please contact this department on 01691 677225 or email environmentalhealth@oswestry-bc.gov.uk and we will provide you with the relevant documentation and advisory leaflets. Food Safety InspectionsThis department inspects local food businesses for cleanliness and good hygiene practices. There are approximately 400 businesses in the borough. Inspection regimes are risk-assessed according to the degree of potential risk to the public. This ensures that we focus our efforts to the more high-risk premises. Food SamplingThis department undertakes a comprehensive programme of microbiological food sampling. Unsatisfactory results are then investigated with a view to improving hygiene practices within the premises. Healthy Eating AwardsThe healthy eating award scheme exists to give recognition to food businesses that have excellent hygiene in place. It also recognises the provision of smoke-free areas and high levels of training of staff who handle food. Click here to visit the Healthy Eating Awards page. Health Promotion, Education & ImprovementThe Unit works in conjunction with a number of different agencies to improve and protect the health of the community over both the short and long term by health education and promotion. For example: reduction of smoking and promotion of healthy eating with the aim of reducing heart disease in the local population and by the targeting of fuel poverty initiatives to vulnerable groups and individuals through joint working with the Primary Health Care Trust and G.P.s. The unit over the life of this plan will be exploring options for joint working on such initiatives such as Surestart and similar programmes The Unit also provides approved accredited courses in Food and Health and Safety in conjunction with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH). Foundation Certificate in Food Hygiene Courses: This department runs basic food hygiene courses on an ad hoc basis, as and when the interest is there.
