Dog Control Orders

Overview

Dog owners who don't clean up after their pets will run the risk of a bigger fine in the New Year. Measures to combat the actions of irresponsible dog owners come into force on 31st December 2007

They cover:

  • Failing to pick up after your dog has fouled.
  • Failing to keep a dog on a lead on roads, pavements and school playing fields
  • Allowing a dog within certain designated areas where dogs are excluded, like fenced children's play areas
  • Failing to put your dog on a lead when asked to do so by an authorised officer of the Council.
  • Taking more than the maximum permitted number of Dogs onto land specified in the order.

Penalty

Anyone contravening these regulations may be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice fining them £80. The increased fines are part of a set of new Dog Control Orders that have been drawn up to bring the Council's existing orders in line with the provisions of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 (CNEA).

Authorised officers will have the power to require the name and address of any person who has breached a Dog Control Order for the purpose of issuing a Fixed Penalty Notice. It is an offence, triable in the Magistrates Court, for a person either to fail to give that information or to give false or inaccurate information. On conviction, the Magistrates may impose a fine of £1000.
