Avian InfluenzaRural Issues Group Update (1- 2008): Avian Influenza updateDefra today confirmed highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in wild swans in the Chesil Beach area in Dorset. These birds were found and tested following our routine surveillance programme. A 3km Control Area and 10km Monitoring Area has been established around the premises. For a map of the area, please check the Defra web site at www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/diseases/notifiable/disease/ai/pdf/map-dorset080110.pdf Defra is also working with closely with ornithological and other experts to consider whether any wider measures may be needed. No disease has been found in domestic birds, and a programme of surveillance is being carried out in the local wild bird population. There will be no culling of wild birds because such action may disperse birds further. Visiting the CountrysideFootpaths in the area remain open. Although the premises themselves are closed to the public, that has been the case since October due to the time of year. There is therefore no need for people to stop visiting this part of the countryside. Our Contingency plan for Avian Influenza (and other animal diseases) includes a protocol which makes clear that there should be a presumption in favour of maintaining public access. It is very unlikely that contamination can be spread by walkers using fields where free-range poultry are kept, although basic precautions such as cleaning footwear should be undertaken. Visitors should not give food to any farm animals or birds or leave food anywhere where they may get access to it. We would also advise the public at all times to avoid contact with bird faeces and ill or dead birds and, in case of any contact, to take simple hygienic measures i.e. wash any contaminated skin, clothing or footwear with soap and water. Further biosecurity advice is available on the Defra website. Shooting and HuntingAll hunting and shooting activities in the two areas are banned but not elsewhere. Similarly bird gatherings are only banned in the areas.
