Concessionary Travel 2008/2009 for persons having an eligible disability

Am I eligible?

If you live in the Borough of Oswestry and you are disabled in any of the following ways:-

  1. registered blind/partially sighted (BD8 form)
  2. registered deaf and/or have profound speech impairment
  3. learning disability
  4. not permitted to drive on medical grounds due to permanent disability 
  5. without use of both arms
  6. seriously impaired ability to walk

you may only have a Bus Card OR a voucher towards the cost of a Disabled Persons Rail Card as listed under 'What is available?' below.

What is available?

ONE of the following options

(A)  Bus Card allowing free travel, ( subject to conditions below), on LOCAL buses anywhere in ENGLAND. Additionally, free travel is available on cross-border services in both directions, as follows:-

Oswestry - Wrexham, Welshpool, Chirk, Llanfyllin, Llansilin, Llangedwyn, Llangynog
Shrewsbury - Welshpool, Montgomery, Newtown
Whitchurch - Wrexham, Chester
Ludlow - Knighton
Wem - Wrexham

Issued free and entitles user to free travel on local bus services between 9.30 am to 11 pm Monday to Friday or any time on other days and Public Holidays, (including all Park & Ride facilities anywhere in England, subject to the above time restrictions), and/or half fare on Dial-a-Ride - Tel. No. 01691 671571.

For people having a disability, which prevents them from physically leaving their motorised scooters/wheelchairs, the new Bus Card will entitle them to use specially adapted taxis at half-fare within Oswestry Borough Council area only. Taxis available through Berwyn Cars of Gobowen - Tel. No. 01691 652000 or Jeff Taxis & Minibuses - Tel No. 01691 656367

N. B. NOT valid for travel on trams, light railways, underground rail, National Express or private coaches.

OR

(B)  Rail Voucher value £18.00 - Costs £4.50 payable to the Council and entitles user to put the voucher towards the cost of a National Rail Card, giving one-third discount on nationwide rail fares for a period of 12 months from date of purchase.

OR

(C)  If you are 60 years of age or more, you may purchase a Senior Citizens Railcard at a cost of £7, which entitles user to one-third discount on nationwide rail fares for a period of 12 months from date of purchase

How much does it cost?

1. Bus Card

Free issue and free travel on local bus services between 9.30 am and 11 pm Mondays to Fridays and any time on other days and Public Holidays, (including Park & Ride facilities anywhere in England, subject to above time restrictions).

Where do I apply?

Application forms are available to download by following the link at the bottom of the page or from your local Council office.

PLEASE NOTE - Proof of identity, as specified below, MUST be shown when submitting your completed application. Bus Cards will be posted to you approx. 10 days after your application is received. Disabled Persons Rail Cards/Senior Citizens Railcards may be purchased from the Council main reception at Castle View.

Important Terms and Conditions

Bus Cards remain the property of the Council throughout their validity. If you cease to be a resident of Oswestry, you must return your card to your local Council office. Please use this link to the full guidance notes for the full terms and conditions.

Do I need to supply proof of identity/eligibility by disability?

YES - one of the following has to be shown:-

Proof of entitlement to any one of the following:-

  1. Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance.
  2. War Pension Mobility Supplement
  3. Attendance Allowance
  4. Invalid Care Allowance
  5. Industrial Injuries Disability Benefit
  6. Letter from your doctor confirming permanent disability which prevents you from driving a motor vehicle.

How long does it last?

BUS CARDS are for use from 1st. April, 2008 for a period of approx. 4 years. Expiry date will be shown on card.

OR

RAIL VOUCHERS are for use for a period of 12 months from the date of issue.

What do I do if my pass is lost or stolen?

Contact 01743 210336 OR your local Council office at Castle View, Oswestry in person.

If you lose your bus card, there may be an adminiistration charge of £5.00. If your bus card is stolen, replacement may be free of charge, provide you produce proof of the Police Case Reference Number.

If you lose your rail voucher or it is stolen, it will be necessary for you to purchase a new one at the rates detailed above.
