Change of Use

The material change of use of land and buildings is development and will often need planning permission.

The Town and Country Planning (Use Classes) Order 1987 as amended defines 10 categories of building usage and planning permission is not required to change from one use to another if those uses are within the same group.

For example, permission is not required to change from a shoe shop to a hairdresser because both are within the same use category.

Permission is required, however, to change from a shoe shop or a hairdresser to a hot food takeaway. It should be noted that planning permission is needed to divide an existing dwelling house into two self-contained flats. Here again, the officers of the Planning Department can advise you if you are in doubt.
