New Development and The Need to Travel

New development proposals should be located so as to limit the need to travel and allow access by a variety of modes of transport. Development proposals which generate unnecessary levels of private traffic will be resisted.

4.15 - This policy is based on the provisions of PPG 13 on Transport in relation to reducing the need to travel by private car. The need for sustainable development is a major theme of the Local Plan which promotes a pattern of development which seeks to reduce the need to travel and, in particular, reduce reliance on the private car. This is achieved by locating the majority of new development in the main settlements (as identified in Policy H5 of the Housing Chapter) where a range of services and facilities exists and where public transport is at its most accessible. However, small scale development may be allowed in other settlements in the interest of rural diversification and in order to maintain existing community services and facilities.

4.16 - The Council is actively working to improve facilities for cyclists. A project to link residential areas in eastern Oswestry to the Maesbury Road industrial estate by the creation of a cycle way will be completed during the plan period.
