Policy TR4: Off-Street Parking

Off-Street car parking in Oswestry Town Centre will be maintained at a level appropriate for sustaining the viability and vitality of the Town Centre.

Any proposals for the redevelopment of existing town-centre car parks will be resisted unless suitable alternative provisions are made.

4.19 - The current level of car-parking in Oswestry Town is illustrated in figure 4.1. The Borough Council believes that the current situation represents a level of provision which is appropriate to ensuring the viability and vitality of the town centre. It is also considered that the provision of significant additional car parking over and above current levels will attract additional car use and would therefore be contrary to the Plan's commitment to sustainable development. It is, however, important to maintain the existing level of town centre off-street parking. As a result, proposals which involve the loss of existing facilities will be required to provide suitable alternative provisions, and new developments will be required to provide provisions to meet their own needs in accordance with policy TR3.

*The Coney Green car park will form part of the new Sainsbury supermarket site. It will be replaced by the new supermarket car park, plus additional spaces at Arthur's Garage (Policy TR5). The Oak Street Car Park may also be enlarged.
