Chapter 6: Tourism Development

INTRODUCTION

6.1 - Tourism is developing rapidly in Oswestry and the surrounding area and is a growing force within the local economy.

6.2 - This chapter of the Local Plan has the following aim, as set out in the Local Plan Strategy (Chapter 2): 'To promote the development of appropriate new tourist facilities and attractions within the area whilst acknowledging the need to sustain the quality and amenity of the local environment upon which the tourism industry depends.'

6.3 - Local Plan policies and proposals have therefore been designed to provide a clear context for appropriate tourism developments in the plan area. This context is consistent with advice contained in PPG21 (Tourism) and with the County Structure Plan.

6.4 - Over the plan period proposals for new tourism developments are expected in the following forms:

Increased holiday accommodation in the form of hotels, guest houses, self-catering accommodation, chalets and caravan sites;

The restoration of Montgomery Canal to cruising standard and the development of a whole range of canal-side facilities including a major marina complex;

The development of a Heritage Area at Llanymynech, a visitor car park and interpretation facilities at Old;

Oswestry Hill Fort, and the possible development of other visitor attractions in the Town and in the rural area;

Proposals based on the enjoyment of the countryside especially for walking, horse-riding and other activities.

Development proposals should be designed so as to meet the requirements of Policies NE2 (New Development in the Countryside), NE11 (Watercourses), and NE12 (Groundwater & New Developments).

6.5 - The Oswestry area owes its attraction to the high quality of the landscape and the character of its settlements. The control of tourism development requires a balanced approach to ensure that high standards are set for development, that inappropriate development is avoided and that proposals related to the growth of the tourism industry pay due respect to the need to sustain the quality and amenity of the local environment.
