Residential and Nursing Homes

Introduction

3.202 - In recent years the Borough Council, along with most other Local Planning Authorities, has received an increasing number of planning applications for Residential and/or Nursing Homes for the elderly. Many applications have been for the conversion - often with extensions - of existing large houses in the Town and in the rural area.

3.203 - It is not the duty of the Local Planning Authority to question the need for these residential/nursing homes, nor is it the Authority's responsibility to judge whether the relevant premises offer suitable facilities for the intended purpose. These are the duty of other Authorities - namely the County Council in respect of Residential Homes and the Area Health Authority in the case of Nursing Homes.

3.204 - The purpose of the Local Plan policies is to set down the planning criteria, which need to be satisfied if the particular residential or nursing home is to receive planning permission.
