Internal Audit Service

Internal Audit is an independent assurance function within the authority as an aid to management. This is provided by evaluating the Council's effectiveness in achieving the organisation's objectives. The Internal Auditors evaluate and report on the adequacy of the control environment as a contribution to the economic, efficient and effective use of resources.

The core service we provide is to appraise and report upon the adequacy of systems employed by management to secure:

• Assurance that all the Financial systems are secure
• All internal and external regulations and policies are followed
• Achievement of goals and objectives
• Reliability and integrity of management information
• Efficient and effective use of resources
• Security of Assets
• Computer Audit ( IT security, applications and software control, systems development, contingency planning and disaster recovery).

We help management to strengthen the controls in their manual and computer systems by discussing and agreeing improvements following objective testing and evaluation. In addition we provide:

• Advice on setting up financial controls
• Contract auditing
• Advice on systems development
• Investigating suspected frauds and irregularities

The Internal Auditors are flexible in their approach to meet the demands of the changing needs of management. There is a close partnership between management, internal audit and the auditors which helps the Internal Auditors understand the aims so that they can provide a practical and responsive service.

The Internal Auditors work is scrutinised by the External Auditees ( Audit Commission ) and they report each year to the Full Council that they can place reliance on the work of the Internal Auditors.
