Street Cleaning

The Council is responsible for the sweeping of streets and removal of litter.

The council undertakes regular scheduled street cleaning of roads and footpaths within towns and villages in the District.  Different areas of the District are cleaned on different frequencies, but as a general rule, the following criteria apply:

  • Town centres and smaller shopping precincts are cleaned every day
  • Town centre outskirts and principal urban routes are cleaned weekly
  • High density suburban housing areas are cleaned monthly
  • Low density housing areas, villages and rural link roads are cleaned every two months

The more frequently the road is used, the more often it will be swept. However, if the visual appearance of an area should deteriorate to an unacceptable level between cleans, it will be cleaned up within a certain time, as laid down in a Litter Code of Practice under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

If you need further information on street cleaning in your area, or wish to check when your street is next due to be cleaned please contact Technical Services using the contact details at the bottom of this page.

Street Litter Bins

Litter in a public place is unsightly, dangerous to animals, and an offence. The average fine for littering is around £95, but can be up to £2,500.

Litter ranges in size from a single sweet wrapper, to a bag full of rubbish. The Environmental Protection Act of 1990 states that if a person drops, throws, deposits, or leaves anything that causes defacement in a public place, they are committing a littering offence.  So always try to use a litter bin or take it home.

Please contact Technical Services to report any problems with a litter bin, or to request a litter bin at a new location.

Dead Animals

The Council provides a free service for the removal of dead animals from all public accessible areas.

  • We do not remove dead animals from private residences.
  • For more information please contact us using the below details.

Flyposting

If you would like any unsightly flyposting removed from Council property, private property or street furniture, please use the contact details below.

Graffiti

Graffiti is an illegal, anti-social activity that creates a negative impression of an area and contributes to people's fear of crime.

Please contact Technical Services if you would like any unsightly graffiti removed from Council property, or street furniture.

To request graffiti removal or report graffiti online please select the link in the "Apply Online" section of this page.
