Food Hygiene Regulations 

The Food Hygiene (England) Regulations 2005

The new EC regulations on Food Hygiene comes into force on 1st January 2006. One of the most important changes in this Regulation is the requirment for Food Business operators to put into place management procedures to control food safety. To help small businesses the Food Standards Agency have developed an approach called 'Safer Food, Better Business' (SFBB). It consists of factsheets, using non-technical language and pictures with a diary designed to aid record keeping. It is practical and easy to use. Correctly implemented it meets the requirments of the new Regulation and can in fact be broadly mapped on to the traditional 7 principals of HACCP.

The Agency appreciates that there are many different tools that businesses can use to develop food safety systems and there is no suggestion or requirment that businesses that have successfully implemented food safety systems need to change them. The purpose of SFBB is to fill gaps, allowing businesses that have had difficultly with previous approaches to improve their standards and comply with the law. SFBB has been developed to allow businesses to manage food safety and protect consumers whilist at the same time avoiding unnecessary burdens on the businesses.
