Oswestry RegenerationPlease use the links below to jump to the section you wish to view, or scroll down the page to view the sections in order. The Strategic Package The Strategic PackageBuilding on the principles of the successful Leader 2 and Objective 5b programmes, the Strategic Package is working within the framework of the wider regeneration agenda for the area, as set out in the community strategy, Rural Regeneration Zone prospectus and West Midlands Market Towns Initiative. The Medi ParcDrawing on the status of the orthopaedic hospital as a national centre of excellence, this project will seek to promote the development of a technology cluster in Oswestry based around commercial medical technologies. The development of the site will lead to new, highly skilled and highly paid jobs being brought to the area and introducing a new aspect to the local employment market as well as the borough's economy. Within the staff of the Orthopaedic hospital is the expertise and the insight to create commercial opportunities from scientific developments, which would translate to new businesses within this technology cluster. There is no development plan for the site as yet as consultation with residents surrounding the proposed area is still ongoing. Enhancing The Built EnvironmentWorking with local businesses and private individuals, we want to improve the image of the town centre by regenerating some of the buildings that contribute to the heritage of the town of Oswestry. Oswestry. Community TourismThe Oswestry Community Tourism Initiative aims to provide the resources and infrastructure necessary to support community-led economic development in Oswestry Town and its surrounding rural hinterland. It particularly seeks to support the larger, community-led tourism projects, which have not only been identified as a priority for the local communities concerned, but have also been identified in local strategies as being capable of making a major contribution. As well as building the tourism product in the area the programme will provide the more disadvantaged communities with access to funding and thereby enhance community life. In the longer term it will provide rural communities with employment opportunities and encourage up-skilling into new growing industries such as tourism and the environment. The initiative comprises the following pre-identified, community led tourism infrastructure projects:
Each of the projects will benefit from a shared pot of European and Regional Development Agency funding totalling just over £1 million. This funding will also lever over £1 million in match funding. These Community Enterprise Centres are planned to be in the villages below and will be open to groups from around the areas surrounding them as well as those within the villages. Llanyblodwel St Martins Weston Rhyn Llanymynech Ruyton XI Towns Market Town InitiativeFollowing on from the Rural White Paper of 2000, funding was made available to support initiatives and projects by businesses and communities that would support the local rural economy. The Oswestry Market Town Partnership is the steering group for the local Market Town Initiative (MTI). It is their job to oversee the allocation of the funding to projects as well as encouraging applications from the community. The Oswestry MTI has supported a number of local projects, including the CCTV scheme within the town, Community Tourism Development, Llanymynech Marketing and Promotion, Oswestry Shop Mobility, Oswestry Green Network and a number of other local projects. Progress on the Market Towns Initiative development plan This is a significant investment programme for the Town of Oswestry and its rural hinterland. The programme has levered a £1million pound's worth of investment to the borough and is a main consultee for the Community Partnership. Areas of expertise are in partnership working, engaging with local business and working with interest groups, developing projects to fulfil the needs as highlighted in the Health Check (2001). To date the programme has created significant gains for the town in terms of job creation, business start up's and social enterprise developments. Details of all the projects which include the refurbishment of the Cambrian Station Building, Business Grant Scheme, Youth Café and a Local food marketing Initiative with funding allocations are available in the Oswestry Market Town Partnership Mid term report.
