Entertainment & Alcohol Licences

Licensing Act 2003

Since the introduction of the Licensing Act 2003 the law relating to alcohol sales, public entertainment and late night refreshment has changed.  Local Authorities now have responsibility for licensing all outlets within their district/borough which provide these facilities.  The Act allows flexibility of hours.

If you are involved in the following you will require a Premises Licence or Club Premises Certificate under the Licensing Act 2003:

• Boxing or wrestling (both indoor and outdoor) 
• Film exhibitions
• Indoor sporting events
• Live music performance
• Performance of dance
• Playing of recorded music
• Provision of entertainment of a similar nature
• Provision of facilities for dancing
• Retail sale of alcohol
• Supply of alcohol to club members
• Supply of hot food and/or drink between 11.00 pm and 5.00 am
• Theatrical performance

For the retail sale of alcohol you will also need a Designated Premises Supervisor.

Anyone who wishes to authorise the sale of alcohol or become a Designated Premises Supervisor will also be required to hold a Personal Licence.

The Licensing Section are responsible for various types of licence application including:

• Premises Licences - new, variation, transfer of licence, change of designated premises supervisor
• Club Premises Certificates
• Personal Licences
• Temporary Event Notices

Since the introduction of the Licensing Act 2003 every Authority must publish a Statement of Licensing Policy, which is then reviewed every three years.  Once again, the five Shropshire Borough and District Authorities have joined together to produce a revised policy.  Please click here to view the current policy.
